Journey thru the history of furniture.
Painted furniture goes all the way back to ancient Egypt, where craftsmen used precious metals and vibrant pigments to create intricate designs, showcasing their works of art.
Later, during the Renaissance Era, the painting of furniture became a symbol of status and wealth. Bringing art into daily life, with hand painted landscapes, portraits and the likes, skilled artisans and craftsmen spent hours creating intricate scenes onto furniture.
After the Industrial Revolution, the birth of mass produced furniture did not see an end to the art of hand painting. It remained an integral part of interior design, but with simpler styles and finishes.
The 20th Century, brought with it a revolutionary transformation. The introduction of the Art Nouveau movement and the likes of Gustav Klimt, brought bold colors, geometric shapes and abstract patterns, thereby turning rather plain furniture into amazing works of art.
Today, there’s has been a resurgence of furniture painting. Creatives from around the globe are learning from the masters, studying old techniques and explorng new ideas while giving life to vintage furniture. We are growing ever aware of our need to reduce waste and our carbon footprint, to promote sustainability. With distressing, decoupage, stencilling, marbling, gilding, french polishing, resin pouring and so many other techniques we are creating “the antiques of the future” and becoming a part of the story that has shaped furniture painting from years gone by.
What’s the fuss about transfers ?
If someone asks me is that completely hand painted? Or is that a sticker? I say no!
If the entire piece of furniture was hand painted, it would take a very long time, I would only e able to complete one piece every few months, and that would be reflected in the price.
Stickers, are printed on adhesive backed paper, which sits on the surface and is not only visible, but easily damaged.
Decals, are the same except they are printed on a clear carrier material instead of paper.
An artist quality transfer, is a proprietary process, that allows only an ink image to be transferred to a surface or substrate. Then the ink is sealed with layers of clear coat or wax/oil and is no longer distinguishable from the substrate or surface.
The image becomes a part of the furniture and once sealed is fairly permanent.
It’s similar to purchasing a limited edition print from a well-known artist instead of the original. I believe that art should be available to the people , and not only in a museum.
So it’s a win win!! Beautiful art.. at a lower price.
Why should you paint your furniture?
In a world of flat-pack mass-produced furniture - made from wood chips and glue - we are becoming more conscious of the effect that our buying habits are having on our surroundings, and the damage that we are doing to the environment.
